CBN: Everything You Need to Know

CBN: Everything You Need to Know

When it comes to cannabis PR, THC and CBD always get the spotlight. But there are more than 100 cannabinoids in the cannabis plant and some of the lesser-known ones are proving to have some really amazing benefits. Cannabinol, or CBN, is one of the more intriguing of them.  This guide is meant to give consumers insight into what CBN is, what it does and why you should care.

CBN is most widely known for its ability to promote sleep and relaxation. While it does have a psychoactive effect, it is much milder than THC.  And in smaller doses, most people don’t feel “high” at all from CBN. CBN is known to be calming and sedative.

Cannabinol interacts with the human body’s endocannabinoid system, or ECS, a network of receptors that helps regulate various physiological processes, including pain, mood, sleep and inflammation. CBN binds to receptors, much like THC does; however, the bond is not as strong, which is why the CBN “high” is way less intense than that of THC.

Though research is still in fairly early stages, studies have been promising, showing that in addition to sleep, CBN has several broad areas for potential use including pain relief, appetite stimulation, as an anti-inflammatory, and even as a means of protection against some neurological disorders.

The Origins of CBN

CBN is a particularly interesting cannabinoid in that it is formed in the plant as much as it is grown.  CBN is not produced directly, rather it is created over time as the plant ages.  When the plant is exposed to oxygen and light, the THC degrades and morphs into CBN.  Did you ever notice that when you find that old joint in the back of drawer, it makes you extra sleepy?  This is why!

CBN and its Uses

These days cannabis processors have found ways to isolate CBN for use in all kinds of products.  The vast majority of products, however, use CBN in combination with other cannabinoids such as CBD or THC in order to take advantage of a wider array of benefits.

  • Edibles – Gummies, chocolates, baked goods, you name it.  These products are very popular for those looking for some help getting to sleep and/or pain relief.
  • Oil tinctures – The oil can be dropped under the tongue for faster absorption.
  • Capsules – Convenient for travel and precise dosing.
  • Topicals – These creams and balms are popular for more targeted pain relief and inflammation.

Is CBN Safe?

CBN is generally considered to be quite safe.  Though some users experience mild side effects such as dry mouth and dizziness (though usually at high doses).  And of course, given its nature, CBN does promote drowsiness, so be sure to consume your products in a safe environment.  As with any supplement, if you have further questions about its effects or its interactions with other medications, please consult a doctor before using any CBN-infused products.

Is CBN legal?

Because of the differing laws surrounding cannabis on a federal level vs. individual states, the legality of cannabis and its cannabinoids can often be confusing.  Generally speaking, CBN derived from the hemp plant (as opposed to the cannabis plant) is considered legal under the 2018 Farm Bill.  However, it is important to check the laws in your own state before purchasing any CBN products.

A Final Note

While CBN may not get the same press as THC or CBD, those in the know have been getting very excited about CBN and its many positive benefits.  And the buzz is well-deserved as consumers find CBN to be a useful and natural alternative for those seeking better sleep and pain relief.  If you’ve found this article, you’re probably well into your own research into CBN and CBN-infused products.  We are fans and think you will be too!
