Sativa vs. Indica: A quick guide to choosing the best edible for you

Sativa vs. Indica: A quick guide to choosing the best edible for you

Edibles are all the rage these days. And for good reason: they offer a smoke-free, convenient, inconspicuous and absolutely delicious way to enjoy cannabis. But edibles come in all different shapes and sizes promoting all different effects and moods, so choosing which edible is right for you can be a headache (much like the one you’re trying to get rid of!).  Don’t worry, we’re here to help…

Sativa vs. Indica: The Basics

At this point, you’ve probably heard these terms.  Sativa and Indica are the two primary sub-classifications of cannabis. Generally speaking, Sativa is the more uplifting, energetic strain. A Sativa high will enhance your mood, focus and creativity.  Indica, on the other hand, is more calming. Indica helps you relax deeply, relieve stress and enhance sleep.

While you will have to choose your own adventure, a lot of people enjoy Sativa-based experiences during the day – at social gatherings, for creative projects or just for a mood boost!  Indica experience seekers often consume towards the end of the day to wind down and ease into the night.  Indica is good for relief from pain, anxiety or insomnia.

Don’t Forget About Hybrids!

Before we get too far down this road, you gotta know about hybrids. As the name would suggest, this is a combo of the two, and a great option for many occasions. Hybrids offer a balanced experience –  a nice mood booster, but not overstimulating; relaxation without the drowsiness. Hybrids can be a great way to start your cannabis journey as you figure out your more specific preferences.

Other Factors to Consider

In addition to the strain, there are a number of other factors to consider before making your choice.

  • On a practical level, what are you planning to do? Go for a hike, see a movie, write your novel or are you just hanging out at home? Consider whether you want energy or relaxation.
  • Because edibles (and the THC that comes with them) are processed through your liver, the edibles experience (when compared to smoking or vaping) takes longer to begin (sometimes up to 2 hours depending on a few factors) and the effects last a lot longer (4-6 hours, sometimes more!). So time should also be a consideration.
  • Beginners should always start with a low dose and see how it goes. If you need more, you can always eat more. But if you need less, ummm…you’ll just have to ride it out. So start slow and don’t try to keep up with your experienced edibles friend. Like alcohol, your friend’s body has built up some tolerance with more frequent consumption.

Wrap Up

In the end, choosing the right edible is a very specific and personal choice. You want to think about your mood, your activity level and your schedule. Sativas are euphoric and active. Indicas are relaxing and dreamy. And hybrids split the difference. So get out there, be smart and give them a try! Your life will be richer for it.
